The RAW Realities of Newborn Photography (And What Newborn Photographers Might Not Tell You!)
From A Newborn Photographer Photographing Calgary and Area Families since 2015.
Hey, lovely folks! Today, I'm thrilled to open the door to a heartwarming newborn session and simultaneously share some of the raw realities that weave through the delicate art of newborn photography based on my own experience. Across the span of my career, I've surfed the waves of highs and navigated the depths of lows, gathering a treasure trove of lessons. Join me as I unravel the top skills and aspects of my photography venture that keep the journey exhilarating—albeit with a hint of spine-tingling excitement and even some anxiety - haha!
(Also, kudos to anyone who caught the play on words for the title of this blog 😉😆)
Handling the Unpredictable
Despite the most meticulous planning, newborns (or toddler siblings) have a mind of their own. They may not always cooperate with posed setups, and unexpected challenges—like a sudden bout of fussiness or an unplanned feeding session—can throw a session off course.
However, with my newborn and family photography career almost reaching a decade of experience, I am well-equipped to adapt to and accommodate whichever scenario is thrown my way and I will always put my best foot forward to accomplish the photographs of your dreams!
Patience is More Than a Virtue - it's a Necessity
Achieving those adorable, serene newborn poses requires a hefty dose of patience. Babies don't always respond to posing or settle into sleep as quickly as desired. As an experienced photographer, I am prepared to wait for those perfect moments, embracing the unpredictable pace of a newborn session.
Investment Beyond Gear
While having top-notch photography gear is crucial, the financial investment for a newborn photographer extends beyond cameras and lenses. High-quality props, backdrops, and a variety of accessories add to the overall cost. Additionally, continuous learning and professional editing software are essential, requiring ongoing investments in courses and subscriptions.
The Emotional Toll
Working intimately with newborns and their families involves more than just technical skills—it demands emotional resilience. Newborn photographers often witness the raw emotions of sleep-deprived parents, postpartum adjustments, and the fleeting nature of early parenthood. Toddlers and newborns cry and sometimes make sessions feel more difficult than they need to be. Managing these emotional dynamics is an integral aspect of the job that requires compassion, understanding, and a willingness to listen and hear what clients are communicating.
Physical Demands
The physical demands of a newborn photoshoot can be taxing. Photographers often find themselves in various positions—crouching, kneeling, and leaning—for extended periods to capture the perfect angle. This physical strain, coupled with the need for a gentle touch during posing, requires photographers to maintain their own well-being and stamina throughout lengthy sessions. It's a reminder that the artistry of newborn photography goes hand-in-hand with physical endurance.
Time Isn't Always on Your Side
Newborn sessions require a considerable investment of time, often extending beyond the actual photoshoot. Editing, client communication, and meticulous preparation for each session demand a photographer's dedicated time and attention, sometimes leading to longer work hours than anticipated.
To put into perspective, the average newborn session from start to finish (I'm talking initial client inquiry to final delivery) equals an average of 24 hours* of solid work (PER session - and not including the other work tasks involved in running a photography business!)
*This is based on my own process and may vary between photographers.
The Balancing Act
Newborn photography isn't just about capturing beautiful moments; it's a delicate balance between artistic vision and the safety and comfort of the newborn. Photographers must navigate the fine line between achieving creative shots and ensuring the well-being of the baby, requiring constant attention to details like proper posing techniques and gentle handling. Striking this balance is both an art and a responsibility that comes with the territory of newborn photography.
Client Expectations vs. Reality
Managing client expectations can be a challenge in newborn photography. While photographers strive for perfection, factors such as a baby's temperament, sleep patterns, and unpredictable moments can impact the final results. Communicating these potential variables upfront and educating clients about the collaborative nature of the process helps in establishing realistic expectations and fostering a positive client-photographer relationship.
Post-Processing Precision
The work doesn't end when the photoshoot concludes. The meticulous process of post-processing is a time-consuming aspect that demands attention to detail. Perfecting the final images involves subtle retouching, colour correction, and ensuring a seamless presentation. Navigating the intricacies of editing requires a commitment to honing digital skills and investing additional hours beyond the initial session.
Vulnerability in Artistic Expression
Newborn photographers often pour their creativity and heart into each session, creating a vulnerable connection between their artistic expression and the families they work with. Sharing personal artistry means opening oneself to subjective interpretations and occasional critiques. Navigating the balance between preserving one's unique style and meeting client expectations requires a delicate dance, adding an emotional layer to the profession that photographers may not always anticipate. It's a journey of self-expression that demands resilience and a genuine passion for the craft.
And there you have it!
These are a few aspects behind the scenes of what it truly takes to be a newborn photographer. It's not just about clicking cute pictures; it's about navigating the unpredictable, balancing creativity and responsibility, and, let's not forget, enduring a bit of physical acrobatics. (After all, newborn photography is my hot yoga!)
So, to all the aspiring newborn photographers out there, know that it's a mix of patience, flexibility, and a touch of magic. Embrace the unpredictability, manage those client expectations like a pro, and remember, the hard work doesn't end when the baby goes to sleep—it's just the beginning of the adventure.
In this world of tiny fingers and sweet smiles, every click is a step in crafting memories that last a lifetime.
