A Portrait Session for my Mom
Whether she fully understands the meaning behind this for me or not, the fact that I had the opportunity to enjoy a portrait session with my mom, in my studio, meant so much to me. My Mom has always been my #1 Fan. She has always supported me. When she told me that she wanted to get her portraits done, I agreed with her. When she told me she wanted ME to do them, I simultaneously felt nervous but excited at the same time.
She got her hair and make-up done, and arrived at my studio for her session. I told her I was going to put my "work face" on while I guided her into different poses. She looked around and said, "Wow! You have real lights and equipment and everything!" "
"Yes," I laughed. "This is my job! It's the real deal, Mom!"
My Mother is a gorgeous person. Not just on the outside, but on the inside, too. She dedicates her time and talents of observation and incredible organization and keeping track of fine details working with students, making sure their needs are fulfilled to set them off with their best foot forward throughout their education. She is the world's luckiest Grandma, and my kids are the worlds luckiest grandkids because they get to see Grandma every day at school!
My girls were standing by, watching Grandma have her picture taken while also watching me at work - something they haven't seen me do before with someone other than themselves. "Wow, you look great, Grandma!" They would chime in. Every now and again, my Mom would look at one of them and the BEST smiles would sneak across her lips. It made me realize just how lucky I am to have such a wonderful mother, and how blessed I am to have her in my life as well as in my kids' lives.
She is a dedicated woman. She doesn't "half" do anything. She is either all-in, or all-in. ;) And her love for her grandkids just makes me love her even more.
I did the full experience with my Mom to show her exactly what I do with all of my clients. She came back to view her pictures and order her favourites. It's almost kind of strange to have my own mother seeing me in my element, and doing business with my Mom! I was nervous what she would think about her photos, but she absolutely LOVED them! She ordered a BEAUTIFUL album of her portraits, and she struggled to hold back the tears when she flipped through it for the first time.
The part she might not realize right now is how important these portraits are to me, my siblings and my own kids. One day, these portraits will truly mean SO MUCH to us. And I will have that emotional tie of remembering her voice and what we laughed over during our session. I am so blessed to have that gift to hold close to my heart.
I am so glad that my Mom decided to have her portraits professionally done, and I'm even happier that I was the one who got to do them. To say it means a lot to me is an understatement. I truly don't have the words to express the emotions I feel over these portraits.
Mom,
Thank you so much for this gift. I know that your intention was to support my business and show how much you love me. But you have done so much more. I am forever going to hold these photos close to my heart. They will always be close to me, and one day the album you clutched close to your heart the day you received it will return to me and I will clutch it so much harder.
Thank you for always being my #1 fan. Thank you for always believing in me. Thank you for always being a listening ear when I needed it, and thank you for being such an incredible, kind, selfless friend, grandparent, and parent.
Thank you for being you. Don't ever stop being you. Because, without you, this world will be a much less cheerful, giving, happy place. I love you so much.
Sincerely,
Your Daughter (and now, Photographer ;) )
Amanda
