Documenting Their Legacy
Fall is always the busiest time of year for me in regards to outdoor family photos. It's almost like a big adrenaline rush; you never know what kind of weather you're going to get! It could be perfectly warm and sunny, with stunning colours cascading across the landscape around you. Or, it could be a windy, frigid day that can put your tolerance to the test. Although, honestly, we all know that the Fall weather is nothing in comparison to the winter months ahead... it's almost like "training" for what's to come.
What I find interesting is even though the foliage may be gone, and the colours seemingly absent from the environment around you, there is always an opportunity to create beautiful photographs.
It was a chilly evening the day that the Daltons and I went out to capture and document their beautiful little family; with two little ones by their side, it was a bit of a loud and enthusiastic game trying to distract them from the chilly air that nipped at their noses. And while, for the most part, they cooperated brilliantly despite the bite in the air it did prove to be a smidge difficult for the littlest little, Nora, to find comfort as the sun dipped below the horizon. The temperature was tolerable before then, which presented the opportunity to capture some great family portraits of this group of four.
Sometimes, no amount of singing, dancing or silly noises can overcome the cold. After a few attempts of trying to get little Nora to smile, we bundled them up and made plans to try and find a sheltered, warmer spot to finish up the session. But, I always capture the moment. I, personally, love expressions of all sorts - not just smiles. They capture the emotions that day, and sometimes they're just too dang cute.
Don't worry, everybody was bundled up and warm asap.
Despite the frigid Fall evening, the girls still ended up having some fun in my little red wagon. Aren't these portraits so precious?
I absolutely loved working with the Daltons. I love when a family can "go with the flow" and embrace the moments they have with their loved ones during their sessions, even if we have to work past a bit of camera shyness and cold little hands. I absolutely adored hearing their reactions over their photos, with love-filled "awws" and laughter, it warmed my heart to hear the love in their voices as they laid eyes on their photos for the first time.
They picked all of my personal favourites from their session (I always give a little heal click when that happens!)
AND.. not to mention: during the session itself, I had misplaced my camera bag that contained some (expensive) equipment inside it. I had thought someone had made off with it, but Dad went off on a mission and my heart fluttered with joy when I saw him heading back with my precious bag in his grasp. THANK YOU AGAIN, Adam, for your keen eye and kindness to go out and look for my missing bag! For Christmas, I think I may ask for a backpack camera bag, ha!
Even though the evening was chilly, the warmth in the photos overpowers the cold we felt that day. The colours, the expressions and the connections pulled together a beautiful and wonderful family portrait gallery for the Daltons this year, and they have a beautiful book to add to their collection to document life, as it was, in 2019.
And their gorgeous family portrait will hang proudly on their wall for years to come!
