Creating Lasting Moments with Family Portraits
Hocus Focus Photography specializes in Family, Maternity & Newborn Photography in the Calgary, Balzac & Airdrie area.
Sessions have kept a steady pace through the winter months, and with warmer days ahead, I'm itching to reopen my outdoor sessions. Looking back at the stunning sessions from last season only fuels my excitement!
Blogging is a bit like tackling a laundry pile for me; there's always a stack of sessions waiting to be blogged about, and as I keep scheduling and shooting new sessions, the pile keeps growing. Though I might lag behind at times, I always enjoy sharing the photos and stories from each session on my blog!
It was truly an honor to photograph this lovely momma and her family of five boys (plus hubby!). They were such a delightful bunch and a pleasure to work with. What's even more special is that momma is also a photographer herself. It really warms my heart when fellow creatives choose to work with me; it's a compliment that means a lot.
Although there may be a tad more pressure when working with peers, I've come to realize that it's mostly in my head. The final galleries turn out just as stunning as they do for all my other clients; perhaps there's just a touch of extra nerves, similar to stage fright. But, as I've mentioned before, it's all in my head, and it never fails to work out just fine!
I shot this Family Session at Nose Hill Park in Calgary, Alberta. It's one of my go-to spots because the lighting during the Golden Hour is consistently stunning. Plus, given its location, I get to enjoy the Golden Hour a bit earlier, allowing for ample shooting time before sunset.
One of the things I adore about this location is its picturesque tall grasses, stunning trees and bushes, and a fantastic cluster of large rocks that provide the ideal backdrop for Family Portrait Photo opportunities!
In Family Sessions, I make sure to capture both group photos and individual shots of each family member. This way, my clients have a wide variety of beautiful photos to choose from in their galleries. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and I strive to make the process as efficient and painless as possible. Often, some of the best shots happen candidly!
I'd like to take a moment to appreciate how well everyone was dressed during the session. When it comes to choosing outfits for your Family Session, there are a few tips that can really elevate your family portraits and make them extra special!
5 Tips To Help You Dress Your Best for a Family Photoshoot from a Professional Photographer:
1. Coordinate, but don't match.
Aim for a cohesive look by choosing a colour scheme or theme for your outfits. Coordinate colours and styles among family members without going for identical outfits. This adds visual interest whilst still maintaining unity.
2. Consider the season.
Dress appropriately for the time of year. If it's a summer shoot, light and airy fabrics and casual attire may be suitable. If it's the fall season, layering with sweaters and scarves can add texture and warmth.
3. Avoid busy patterns and logos.
Opt for simple patterns or solid colours to avoid distracting from the main focus. Loud patterns and logos can cause strange effects in the photos, are distracting, and often do not photograph well.
4. Aim for timeless rather than trendy.
While it's tempting to dress in the latest trends, timeless clothing choices will ensure your photos will remain timeless, as well. Classic pieces like well-fitted jeans, neutral tones, and elegant accessories never go out of style.
(Unless you love the idea of looking back 10 years from now and giggling over the silly trends from 'back in the day'!)
5. Comfort is key.
Choose outfits that you feel comfortable and confident in. If you or your family members are uncomfortable in what you're wearing, it may show in the photos. Make sure everyone can move freely and comfortably, especially since there will likely be active poses or children involved.
Dressing for a family photoshoot is about striking the right balance between coordination and individuality, while also considering the location, season, and comfort of everyone involved. By following these tips and infusing your personal style, you can ensure that your family portraits reflect the warmth, love, and personality of your family for years to come. So, have fun with your wardrobe choices, and let your family's unique charm shine through in every frame!
