Nicholas' Newborn Session
It's amazing how just a couple of pounds can make such a big difference in the size of a newborn!
The average birth weight of a human baby is around 7lbs 7oz. My babies weighed in on the smaller side between 5-6lbs. And they were itty-bitty, teenie weenie. But, pack a couple of extra pounds onto these kiddos and you have a very different baby altogether!
Nicholas' newborn session was scheduled for when he was to be 7 days old, so still a super fresh little man (or so I thought) to stick into buckets, crates, and what-have-you (us newborn photographers always wonder, "Can I fit a baby in that?" wherever we go shopping.) I almost started to panic when I first laid eyes on Nicholas; to put it bluntly, he was not small. He was about the size of the average 3-4 week old baby that I photograph every now and again, and I was worried that I had made a scheduling mistake.
But, Mom reassured me. "I know, he's big. But yes, he's 7 days old."
*Phew*! I didn't mess up. But woah! I couldn't wait to get my hands on this chubby-licious little dude!
I love when they suck on their bottom lip... so cute!
Weighing in at *just* under 10lbs, Nicholas had me putting my wrapping skills to the test. My lap was full of this scrumptious human and he was a solid little boy, there was no denying! But, while he was hefty he was an absolute sweetheart, and the amount of "jiggle" in his perfect little cheeks as we prepared to get down to business had my own cheeks burning from smiling so much!
Sucking that bottom lip again!
I always love when grandparents come along to a session. Usually, arrangements are made for a grandparent to come along to take home an older sibling once the family portion of a session is over. Newborn sessions can take anywhere between 3-4 hours to shoot (yep, it takes time!) and that can get boring for a kiddo, so bringing along someone who can spend some time with your older child while we finish up your newborn session is always encouraged and recommended (and gives you the opportunity to enjoy the session without any distractions, too!)
But, apart from being a ride home, I love including grandparents into a newborn session. I think it's such a gift to be able to have a picture of your own parents snuggling your babies; like a legacy being documented and a part of the family tree perfectly captured in a beautiful portrait. Plus, I can only imagine what it means to grandma to have a photo of her snuggling her little grand-babies! My mom always tells me, "you love your kids, but then when your kids have their own kids, it's a whole new kind of love!"
I have quite some time yet before I get to experience becoming a grand-parent. BUT... you can bet that when that day comes, I will be fully ready to go to photograph my little grandbabies (if I am so lucky to be able to meet them one day!)
Big Sis was quite cooperative for the most part for her sibling photos with her brand new baby brother. Some kiddos aren't quite sure what all this excitement is about once a younger sibling arrives, so we approach it with a sense of fun and play games. Anything we need to get them comfortable and get a couple of interactions with the new family member.
Sometimes it takes a little bit of dancing, a bit more patience, and a smidge of creativity to get a good shot. But this time, it was a breeze and we were able to get a couple of really adorable and beautiful photos of these two little ones together for Mom & Dad to cherish for a lifetime.
Can I just comment on how beautiful Mom is? WOW. I love the beautiful and calm expression on her face as she snuggles little Nicholas! We had to be quick though; that hefty little boy definitely made our arms ache!
Classic Black & White. Always A Favourite!
Nicholas loved being wrapped up curly and cozy, but once the layers came off it was a bit of a different ballgame. He definitely was not keen on being bare-skinned in the studio, but a wrap over top his back and a soother in his mouth seemed to do the trick. The only problem with that? Getting him to give up the soother...
The session turned into a bit of a game of "give n take" with the pacifier, but despite the small obstacle he was absolutely amazing and settled into his poses quite easily once he got over the fact that I kept moving him again every few minutes for a new pose. Good golly, though. It was so worth it. He is just so delicious!
We Even Got A Little Smirk!
I absolutely love how this gallery turned out, and love the photos that Mom & Dad picked from their session! It brings me so much happiness to see beaming faces and receive beaming reviews from my clients, and I had a very enjoyable time working with this beautiful family! Thank you so much <3
